Any New Year's Fitness Resolutions Out There???
After the holidays, many of us start a new workout routine, join a gym, or start home exercise programs. For those who haven't worked out in a while or have pre-existing medical conditions, this is not always easy and could lead to an injury. Instead of doing it on your own or looking for a Personal Trainer, think about coming to your Physical Therapist. Physical Therapists, apply research and proven techniques to help people get back in motion. They are trusted health care professionals with extensive clinical experience who examine, diagnose, and then prevent or treat conditions that limit the body's ability to move and function in daily life."1 We can assess your total body and develop a program that best addresses your needs to get you where you want to be without causing injury or imbalance somewhere else. The Wall Street Journal published an article on September 27, 2010 entitled "Getting Fit

Without the Pain" which quoted one Physical Therapist as saying "What Physical Therapists are good at is identifying barriers to exercise"3 and another as saying that Physical Therapy " is largely built on the science of anatomy, biomechanics, exercise science and movement analysis."3 click here to read this excellent Wall Street Journal article. Here at A Step Ahead Physical Therapy, we can consult with you to decide what will best fit you. Unless you have an acute condition or injury, you can come in to develop a customized fitness program. Some would argue that a Personal Trainer is cheaper than a Physical Therapist, but "your Physical Therapist can also help you prevent loss of mobility and motion by developing a fitness- and wellness-oriented program tailored to your specific needs "1 as we are " experts in knowing how the body works."2 click here for complete article.

A Step Ahead Physical Therapy is proud to announce that we are now offering one of the most progressive athletic injury risk assessment tests - Functional Movement Screen(FMS) created by physical therapist Gray Cook.

The FMS consists of 7 functional movement pattern tests that are performed and then analyzed by our therapists. Scores are then converted to % injury risk. The FMS is a proven system designed as a screening tool to predict an athlete's predisposition for noncontact injury based on the deficits that present during their screening. The system goes on to prescribe corrective exercises for deficits found during the screen.

For the long-term durability of an athlete FMS is essential in identifying and correcting any abnormal movement patterns, compensatory movements, and asymmetries that will lead to micro-trauma. For full description and details, click here.
